AGI STING/Swift case history 7Civil Engineering Site Investigation for High Mountain Tunnel Construction (Courtesy of Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd.)
Description A tunnel is being constructed as part of an expansion of an existing highway in Korea. The total length of construction is many kilometers and includes a 2 kilometer tunnel. Prior to the start of the tunneling activity, Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. performed a site investigation using their Sting/Swift automatic resistivity imaging system. Data was recorded using 27 electrodes at 20 meter spacing for a total survey length of 520 meter. For the survey, the dipole-dipole electrode array was used. The recorded data, apparent resistivity, was inverted to "true" resistivity using the DIPRO software by Dr. Kim of Korean Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials.. During the data processing, correction for topography was included in the inversion. The picture shows the final resistivity image for one of the lines. High resistive areas (red color) indicate solid rock, low resistive areas (yellow, green and blue color) indicate areas where the host rock has been fractured and thus contains water making the area lower resistive to electrical current, i.e. more conductive. Several zones of low resistivity (fractured/weak zones) could be identified. The tunnel, currently under construction, is being advanced from right to left. The construction stopped at coordinate 350 due to the weak zone, first encountered at 380 meter. Exploratory horizontal drill holes were drilled from the tunnel front, to locate the extent of the weak zone. The horizontal holes confirmed the weak zone between coordinates 340-350 meter. The fracture zone at 80-140 meter corresponds to findings from the surface geological survey. Last modified: 2006-09-07 18:28:29 EDT
